A major urban regeneration project is set to reshape the historic center of Kalymnos after securing €1.034 million in funding for the project titled “Redevelopment and Enhancement of Areas within the Traditional Settlement of Pothia–Chora.” The funding was approved following the signing of the relevant decision by South Aegean Regional Governor Giorgos Hatzimarkos.
The project focuses on upgrading the traditional urban fabric of Pothia through interventions in four key locations: Agios Nikolaos, Agia Triada, the Church of Christ the Saviour, and the Church of the Resurrection. Planned works include new stone paving, improved accessibility, upgraded lighting, installation of urban furniture, landscaping, and aesthetic improvements aimed at enhancing both functionality and public safety.
Mayor Giannis Mastrokoukos described the funding approval as a major success for the municipality, stating that the project will significantly improve daily life for residents and visitors while preserving and showcasing the unique cultural and architectural identity of Pothia. He also expressed gratitude to the South Aegean Region, municipal technical services, and project contributors for their role in preparing the successful proposal.
