The union cites worker testimonies claiming a gas smell had been present for days and complaints were ignored, while referencing reports of a long-term propane leak. It argues that essential safety measures (gas-leak detection systems, emergency exits, etc.) were not adequately ensured, and assigns serious responsibility to both the employer and the government, alleging weakened oversight and employer impunity. It calls for no cover-up, immediate accountability, and offers condolences and wishes of recovery to the injured.
The statement also links the tragedy to broader labor conditions, including intensified work and the pressure on many pensioners to return to work. PES-NAT urges pensioners to join a 24-hour Piraeus strike on Friday, 6 February, with a 10:30 a.m. rally at Piraeus Municipal Theatre Square and a 5:30 a.m. pre-gathering at the Electric Railway station area (BLUE STAR ships).
