The Port Authority in Kalymnos was informed that yesterday (5-4-24) a cargo ship ran aground in the maritime area off the northern coast of Psérimos.
Immediately, the local emergency plan was activated, and a Coast Guard vessel located the cargo ship “LADY MARIA” flying the Tanzanian flag, stranded on a rocky shore.
The ship had departed from the port of Batumi, Georgia, destined for the port of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, loaded with 6800 sheep and goats, while there were 15 foreign crew members and 1 foreign passenger on board.
Two tugboats arrived in the area, with the assistance of which the “LADY MARIA” was detached and towed, escorted by the Coast Guard vessel, to the anchorage of Kalymnos, where it safely docked.
The Port Authority of Kalymnos, conducting the investigation, prohibited the departure of the cargo ship until the presentation of a class retention certificate by the surveyor overseeing it, while no marine pollution or injuries were observed from the incident.
