An event on the proposed “new Lyceum”, the National School-Leaving Certificate and students’ educational needs will take place on Sunday, 11 October, at 7 p.m. at Kalymnos Cultural Centre.
The future of upper secondary education and the impact of proposed changes on students, teachers and families will be the focus of a Communist Party of Greece (KKE) event in Kalymnos on Sunday, 11 October 2026, at 7 p.m., in the ground-floor hall of Kalymnos Cultural Centre.
Entitled “The ‘New Lyceum’ and the National School-Leaving Certificate: KKE’s Response to Students’ Contemporary Educational Needs”, the event invites students, parents, teachers and members of the wider community to join the discussion.
In its announcement, KKE argues that the proposed direction for Greece’s upper secondary schools does not meet students’ educational needs. The party maintains that it reinforces class barriers, increases examination pressure and places a greater burden on families, weakening schools’ role in providing a comprehensive general education.
It also criticises what it describes as a shift towards constant competition over examinations and grades from an earlier age, bringing greater reliance on private tutoring alongside increased stress and pressure. The party opposes an approach to education centred on market needs and disconnected skills.
KKE will instead present its vision of a school that draws on advances in science, technology and teaching to provide a meaningful, comprehensive education for every child.
“A school of knowledge, not despair” is the central message of the invitation, which calls on the local community to take part in the debate.
