Visit of the Archbishop of Australia to the Parliament of the Northern Territory
On Monday, May 19, His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia visited the Parliament of the Northern Territory in Darwin, where he held a cordial and constructive meeting with the Territory’s Chief Minister, Ms. Lia Finocchiaro. Present at the meeting were also His Grace Bishop Silouanos of Adelaide, clergy members Fr. Savvas Pizania and Fr. Christos Tsoraklidis, as well as the Ambassador of Greece to Australia, Mr. Stavros Venizelos.
The Archbishop expressed his gratitude to Ms. Finocchiaro for her support of the Greek Orthodox community and for her presence at the foundation ceremony of the Church of Saint Savvas the New of Kalymnos in Darwin. Ms. Finocchiaro, in turn, praised the significant contribution of the dynamic Greek Orthodox community to the social cohesion and progress of the Northern Territory and expressed her appreciation and respect for the Orthodox Church.
During the meeting, various matters concerning the Greek community of the region were discussed, and a mutual commitment was expressed to further strengthen cooperation between the Holy Archdiocese and the Government of the Northern Territory. Ambassador Venizelos also emphasized the continuous support of the Embassy for the Hellenic diaspora in Northern Australia.
