Dodecanese MP Manos Konsolas has called for alternative freight sailings to safeguard supplies to Rhodes and Kos following the fire aboard the cargo ferry Blue Carrier 2. In a parliamentary intervention addressed to the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, he warned of a potential disruption to deliveries of food, medicines, essential goods and other cargo.
According to the MP’s press release, it is not yet known how long the vessel will be unable to sail. Konsolas is seeking arrangements to cover any gap in service and is expected to contact the minister. The fire broke out on 25 September; in its 27 September update, the Hellenic Coast Guard said the response operation was continuing. ΛΣ-ΕΛΑΚΤ
Konsolas also noted that Rhodes and Kos serve as supply hubs for other Dodecanese islands. His intervention calls for freight links to be maintained while the cause of the fire and the vessel’s condition are assessed. The concern is a possible interruption: the press release does not report that supplies have already been cut off.
