SYRIZA–Progressive Alliance expresses its deep sorrow and respect at the passing of Sylva Akrita, a historic figure of the progressive movement, a pioneering woman in politics, and an activist of the anti-dictatorship struggle through the ranks of the Patriotic Front.
She was the only female parliamentary candidate of the Centre Union in 1967 and later became the first woman Member of Parliament in the history of PASOK. Among other roles, she served as President of the National Library, representative to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, and Deputy Minister of Health, Welfare and Social Security.
During her ministerial tenure, she promoted pioneering legislative initiatives, including the law on the “Write-off of Refugee Debts” and the bill on adoption, while also preparing important policy studies for her time on welfare issues such as the utilization of PIKPA facilities, policies for the elderly, and the protection of abused individuals.
SYRIZA–Progressive Alliance extends its sincere condolences to her daughter, SYRIZA–PS Member of Parliament Elena Akrita, her grandson Pavlos, as well as to her family, relatives and friends.
Sylva Akrita will always be remembered as a model of integrity and dignified public service.
