Culture and Creativity in Kalymnos Finally Find Their Home
After decades, culture and creativity in Kalymnos are finally finding a place to call home.
The Municipal Authority under Mayor Ioannis Mastrokoukos is fulfilling a longstanding request and dream of the island’s cultural community by proceeding with the purchase of a property that will operate as a “Multifunctional Cultural Center.”
Following the Mayor’s proposal, the Kalymnos Municipal Council unanimously approved, during its meeting on May 16, the purchase of the former “Apollon” cinema, located on the pedestrian street in the Patithries area. Kalymnos has consistently produced high-level, nationally recognized cultural work across all fields (theater, music, dance, visual arts, etc.), thanks to the tireless efforts of local volunteer creators — but until now, has lacked the space to properly showcase this richness.
The building, with a total area of approximately 500 square meters in the island’s historic center, fully meets the criteria to host cultural events and will be equipped to function as a modern Conference Venue. It will be capable of accommodating scientific conferences of both national and international significance.
Culture and quality of life are at the top of the Municipal Authority’s agenda. As the Mayor announced during the Council meeting, the Municipality is also in the process of securing funding from the Green Fund for the redevelopment of the “Chorafa” site in Agios Theologos — an underutilized green space in the heart of the town.
The Mayor expresses the deep gratitude of the entire local community to the family of the late Angelis Maragkos, who, with a strong sense of social responsibility, is transferring the property to the Municipality at a significantly reduced price — well below its appraised value.
The Kalymnos of creativity, optimism, and the dreams of every generation is the sole vision of the current Municipal Authority, which works with method, vision, and determination to restore hope for the future of this blessed land.
