Today, June 28, 2025, a press conference was held at the office of former Mayor D. Diakomichalis. The main purpose of the press conference was to restore the truth regarding the so-called “Diakomichalis fine,” as it was labeled during the Kalymnos Municipal Council meeting on June 26, 2025. He emphasized that he reserves all his legal rights concerning the distortion of the truth surrounding this matter.
According to evidence presented by the former mayor, the amount of €690,000, referred to by the current Administration as the “Diakomichalis fine,” is anything but accurate. In fact, a significant portion of the landfill (ΧΑΔΑ) fine—€344,000—is a “Mastroukoukos fine” due to the inaction of the current Municipal Authority from the very first year of its term, as it failed to take even minimal steps to demonstrate efforts to improve the operation of the landfill.
The former mayor also pointed out the Mayor of Kalymnos’s lack of awareness regarding who is responsible for the interim waste management solution on the island, as was evident during the recent visit of the South Aegean Regional Governor, G. Chatzimarkos, to the Kalymnos Municipal Council.
It is worth noting the question raised by the former mayor regarding the reasons behind the change of plans concerning the interim solution. Specifically, he asked why and how the approach shifted from baling to transporting Kalymnos’s waste to Kos.

Additionally, Mr. Diakomichalis criticized the island’s media outlets, arguing that they do not operate properly. Our representative, Eleftheria Tiliakou, responded to this point during the press conference.
In closing, Kalymnos Times asked Mr. Diakomichalis why he insists on the baling method despite the fact that it is no longer funded. He was also asked why his views on waste management align with those of the Mayor of Kos, Theodosios Nikitaras, and whether they have had any communication or coordination on the matter.
