Customers Are Being Charged the Correct Rates
The Municipal Water and Sewage Company of Kalymnos (DEYAK) has responded to concerns raised on social media regarding the VAT rates printed on water bills, stressing that customers have not been incorrectly charged.
According to the utility, the bill forms currently in circulation were printed in 2025, before the VAT reductions that came into effect on 1 January 2026. As a result, the forms still display the previous VAT rates of 13% for water charges and 24% for other fees. However, the actual billing calculations are made using the current legal VAT rates of 9% for water consumption and 17% for all other charges.
DEYAK explains that the decision to continue using the old printed forms was made solely for financial reasons, as thousands of pre-printed bills remained in stock. The utility also announces that all future bills will feature the updated VAT percentages.
In its statement, DEYAK criticizes the spread of inaccurate information that caused unnecessary concern within the local community and urges citizens to verify facts before sharing claims online. The utility reiterates its commitment to legality, transparency and accurate public information.
