The Second Dodecanese Police Directorate is being reinforced with 177 fixed-term border guards and 68 police officers, while a further 49 border guards are expected to be assigned across the region’s two police directorates once their training is complete.
The figures were provided in a written response from Deputy Minister of Citizen Protection Mr Lampropoulos to Dodecanese MP Manos Konsolas, according to a press release issued by the MP on September 29, 2026.
The additional personnel support passport control, travel document issuance, security at migration facilities and migration management operations. The 68 police officers are allocated as follows:
- 34 to passport control services.
- 4 to issue travel documents to recognised refugees.
- 4 to support security at Closed Controlled Access Centres on the eastern Aegean islands through support platoons.
- 11 to “JO GREECE 2026,” the joint operation coordinated by Frontex.
- 2 senior officers to coordinate the reinforcement personnel.
- 13 to the Kos Pre-Removal Detention Centre.
Konsolas continues to call for further staffing through supplementary transfers, citing significant vacancies in established posts and the Directorate’s extensive responsibilities.
Alongside police stations and outposts on the islands, its area of responsibility includes two Closed Controlled Access Centres, the Kos Pre-Removal Detention Centre, four port passport control services, Kos International Airport, which handles substantial passenger traffic, three other state airports, and a prison on Kos.
According to the Deputy Minister’s response, the next reinforcement will comprise 49 additional border guards assigned across the First and Second Dodecanese Police Directorates combined, following the completion of their training. The press release does not specify how they will be distributed between the two directorates or individual islands.
