The European Parliament’s annual State of the European Union debate, one of its most important political events of the year, will take place on Wednesday, September 16, at 10:00 a.m. Greek time, with live coverage available online.
The debate will open with a brief statement by European Parliament President Roberta Metsola. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will then take the floor to outline the European Union’s key priorities and the major challenges it currently faces.
Her address will be followed by interventions from the leaders of the Parliament’s political groups, the Presidency of the Council of the EU and Members of the European Parliament.
This year’s debate is expected to focus on:
- the EU’s long-term budget for 2028–2034,
- measures to strengthen Europe’s competitiveness,
- the development of the EU’s digital economy,
- European climate policy,
- and the wars in Ukraine and Iran.
The annual debate plays an important role in strengthening democratic accountability, giving European citizens an opportunity to learn more about the Union’s political priorities, decisions and future direction.
