The Lyceum Club of Greek Women of Kalymnos invited the Folklore Group of Limassol to jointly organize a commemorative event for the 51st Anniversary of the Invasion of Cyprus on July 20, 2025, at the Open Theater of Chora, Kalymnos.
After the welcoming speeches by the President of the Lyceum Club of Kalymnos, Kalliopi Trikili-Kassara, the President of the Folklore Group of Limassol, Konstantinos Protopappas, the Mayor of Kalymnos Ioannis Mastrokoukos, and the Deputy Governor of Kalymnos Manolis Mousellis, the Honorary President of the Lyceum, Kalliopi Mavrou, addressed the audience with a speech about the invasion. The Honorary President of the Reading Society “Ai Mousai”, Panagiotis Giameos, recited a poem.
This was followed by traditional Cypriot songs performed by the choir of the Lyceum, under the direction of Giorgos Karafyllis, a music teacher and the inspirational force behind the event. The Vice President of the Lyceum, Stella Koutroumani, presented the musical program.
The Folklore Group of Limassol performed songs about refugees and the longing to return to the occupied territories. The event concluded with a reenactment of a traditional Cypriot celebration, during which men and women danced separately, as was customary. The artistic direction was by Konstantinos Protopappas, President of the Limassol Folklore Group. It is worth highlighting Mr. Protopappas’ statement that, although the group has traveled to many cities around the world, this was the first time he was so emotionally moved during a Cyprus-themed event – right here in Kalymnos.
The event was co-organized with the support of the South Aegean Region – Kalymnos Prefecture, and the Municipality of Kalymnos.
