Yesterday, I had the pleasure and honor of welcoming to the Regional Office the Commander of the South Aegean Fire Services Coordination (PEPYD), Senior Fire Chief Mr. Zois Giotis, accompanied by the Commander of the Kos Fire Department, Deputy Fire Chief Mr. Grigorios Mavridis, and the Commander of the Volunteer Fire Station of Kalymnos, Fire Captain Panagiotis Konstantopoulos. The visit took place as part of the preparations for the new fire prevention season, which officially began on May 1st and will last until October 31st.
We held in-depth discussions on issues of prevention and preparedness, emphasizing the importance of cooperation among all involved agencies for the protection of human life, property, and the environment. Our shared goal is constant vigilance and timely response to any potential threat.
Particular emphasis was also given to the crucial role played by the Fire Department in Kalymnos not only in fire protection but also in rescue operations, especially in incidents involving climbing — an activity of great importance to the island’s tourism identity. The high-level training and operational readiness of the Fire Department personnel play a vital role in ensuring the safety of both residents and visitors.
We then proceeded to the Municipal Hall, where we participated in an emergency meeting of the Local Coordination for Civil Protection (T.E.S.O.P.P.).
I sincerely thank the Fire Department officials for their constructive presence and for the strong sense of duty they demonstrate every day.
The Deputy Governor of the Regional Unit of Kalymnos
