Dodecanese MP Manos Konsolas announces higher fuel support for fishermen, with further measures for the sector under consideration.
The Greek government is moving to double the subsidy for diesel consumed by fishing vessels, according to a press release issued by Dodecanese MP Manos Konsolas on 7 October 2026.
The announcement states that support will rise to 32 euro cents per litre for April and May and 24 euro cents per litre for June, July and August. The increase addresses a major operating expense for fishing vessels, while additional measures to support the profession are also being considered.
Konsolas had previously called for assistance with energy costs through a parliamentary intervention. He also requested simpler procedures covering the entire process, from submitting an application to receiving payment.
His proposals include funding programmes for the refitting and modernisation of fishing vessels, alongside incentives to support the fishing profession.
The MP has also raised concerns about illegal fishing, calling for a clear distinction between recreational anglers and individuals who sell catches without being professional fishermen or meeting the same tax and social insurance obligations.
To strengthen oversight, he has proposed registering all vessels on an electronic monitoring platform, following the framework which, according to the announcement, has already been established for professional fishermen.
The press release does not specify a payment timetable or the application procedure for the increased subsidy.
