Major Distinction for Kalymnos: Gerasimos Apostolatos Appointed Vice-President of Greece’s Supreme Medical Disciplinary Council
Kalymnian gynecologist Gerasimos Apostolatos, son of Charalambos, has been appointed a regular member and Vice-President of the temporary Supreme Medical Disciplinary Council of the Panhellenic Medical Association (PIS).
His appointment is included in a joint decision by Health Minister Spyridon-Adonis Georgiadis and Deputy Health Minister Marios Themistocleous, establishing the Interim Administrative Committee of the Panhellenic Medical Association, the temporary Supreme Medical Disciplinary Council and the Audit Committee.
The appointment represents an important distinction both for Mr Apostolatos and for Kalymnos, which will be represented in one of Greece’s highest medical institutional bodies during a critical transitional period for the Panhellenic Medical Association.
According to the official decision, surgeon Georgios Kassaras has been appointed President of the temporary Supreme Medical Disciplinary Council, while gynecologist Gerasimos Apostolatos will serve as its Vice-President. The Kalymnian doctor is also formally listed among the Council’s regular members.
The other regular members are internist Kimon Volikas, radiologist Maria Kouri and otolaryngologist Pavlos Sarof. General practitioner Efstratios Kapolis, otolaryngologist Pantelis Papathanasis and internist Sofia Zafeiratou have been appointed as alternate members.
The temporary Supreme Medical Disciplinary Council’s term may not exceed six months from the publication of the decision. A single extension of up to three months may be granted only under exceptional circumstances.
The interim administration’s mission
The same decision establishes a seven-member Interim Administrative Committee of the Panhellenic Medical Association, chaired by internist Matina Pagoni.
Its term may not exceed six months from the publication of the decision, with the possibility of one extension of up to three months in exceptional circumstances. The Committee is required to immediately initiate the procedures for holding elections and appointing the new governing bodies of the Association.
Until the new bodies are elected, the interim administration may carry out only those actions that are strictly necessary for the administrative, financial and operational management of the PIS.
The temporary bodies were established following a prolonged period of administrative and electoral uncertainty within the Association. The decision refers to the annulment of the 2022 elections by Greece’s Council of State as a substantive review of the legality of the electoral process.
In a post on the X platform, Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis described the interim administration as the only available solution for ending the prolonged internal disputes and legal proceedings within the PIS. He also stated that its members were selected on the basis of their recent electoral mandates, their long-standing service within medical associations and the need to ensure representation from both Athens and the regions.
The appointment of Gerasimos Apostolatos as Vice-President of the temporary Supreme Medical Disciplinary Council further strengthens Kalymnos’ presence within Greece’s national medical institutions. It also places him in a position of considerable responsibility during a decisive period for the restoration of administrative stability within the Panhellenic Medical Association.
