Giannikouris Renews Call for Answers Over Kalymnos Commercial Street Drainage Study
Civil engineer and former Kalymnos mayoral candidate Emmanouil Giannikouris has renewed his call for information concerning the drainage study for the island’s main commercial street, submitting a new letter to Mayor Ioannis Mastrokoukos.
In the letter, dated July 21, 2026, Giannikouris requests an update on the study intended to address stormwater and flooding problems along the commercial street in Pothia, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
He claims that, despite the considerable time that has passed, he has not received the answers requested through a series of earlier submissions to the Municipality of Kalymnos. He refers to letters and applications filed between August 2023 and July 2025, as well as a response issued by the mayor on July 29, 2025, stating that his questions would be forwarded to the competent municipal departments for documented answers.
Giannikouris places particular emphasis on the funds which, according to his letter, were allocated for the preparation of the drainage study. He asks whether the study has been incorporated into a comprehensive technical and financial plan that would allow the project to move swiftly toward implementation for the benefit of residents and local businesses.
His previous submissions also raised questions about several other public-interest projects, including the wastewater treatment and sewerage system serving tourist areas, the Vathy reservoir, the diving park at Arginonta and the Kalymnos tourist marina.
Giannikouris states that his repeated interventions are not intended as a personal confrontation but as an effort to secure public information and scrutiny regarding major infrastructure projects and public expenditure.
“Any unlawful conduct should not remain hidden,” he states in his latest letter, once again requesting clear and fully documented answers from the municipal administration.
