New Democracy MP for the Dodecanese, Giannis Pappas, highlighted key provisions of the new bill introduced by the Ministry of National Economy and Finance that directly concern island communities, municipal transportation services, and regional media outlets.
Speaking in the Hellenic Parliament, Mr. Pappas focused particularly on the amendment ensuring the continued operation of municipal transportation services in Rhodes and Kos following changes caused by the abolition of municipal transport enterprises. He stressed that the measure provides a practical solution for both islands, safeguarding uninterrupted public transport services, fleet renewal, and reliable transportation for both residents and visitors.
The Dodecanese MP emphasized that, especially on islands, public transportation is not merely an administrative service but a crucial factor for daily life, social cohesion, and economic development, particularly in areas with strong tourism activity and increased transportation needs.
Mr. Pappas also highlighted the provision allowing state subsidies for regional television stations for a three-year period starting January 1, 2026, through coverage of digital broadcasting costs. According to him, this measure represents substantial support for regional media and local journalism, especially in island regions such as the Dodecanese, where local media play a vital role in informing citizens and promoting local issues.
In addition, he referred to tax relief measures included in the bill for street market vendors and outdoor trade professionals, as well as reductions benefiting large families, people with disabilities, single-parent families, taxi professionals, and school canteen operators.
“Island communities need meaningful support and practical solutions. Through interventions that address the real needs of local society, we support citizens’ daily lives, local government, regional media, and the developmental prospects of our islands,” Giannis Pappas stated.
