The enduring significance of Greece’s historic “No” and the defence of freedom and national sovereignty are at the heart of Giannis Pappas’s message marking the anniversary of 28 October 1940. The New Democracy MP for the Dodecanese honours those who fought and sacrificed their lives for Greece, highlighting their legacy for future generations.
His full message follows in English translation:
“A people’s freedom is not given; it is won when history calls upon them to decide who they want to be.”
This is the deepest legacy of 28 October 1940.
That a nation’s historical course is shaped not only by the circumstances of its time, but also by the values it chooses to fight for.
The “NO” was an act of national consciousness, a defence of our homeland’s freedom and sovereignty against totalitarianism.
The Greeks proved that national dignity does not bow to the balance of power and that Freedom is a cornerstone of a people’s existence.
We honour the heroes who fought and sacrificed their lives for Greece, for the ideals of Hellenism and for the right of future generations to live in freedom.
Happy national day to our Greece!
May the blue and white flag always fly high!
Giannis Pappas
New Democracy MP for the Dodecanese
