Pontians, Kalymnians, Cretans and Macedonians Unite for a Grand Panagia Soumela Celebration
Melbourne is preparing for a major gathering of faith, tradition and Greek culture on 16 August 2026. Pontians, Kalymnians, Cretans, Macedonians and Greeks with roots in every corner of the homeland will come together for the “Dekapentavgousto Panigiri – Soumeliotissa Feast Day Celebration” at the Greek Orthodox Parish of Panagia Soumela in Keilor East.
Held with the support of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia and the active participation of Pontiaki Estia Melbourne, the celebration will bring the spirit of an authentic Greek village festival to the heart of Australia.
This year’s event carries special significance, as Pontiaki Estia Melbourne marks 50 years of community life and cultural service. Since 1976, the organisation has worked consistently to preserve Pontian heritage, keep historical memory alive and pass the customs, music and dances of Pontus on to younger generations.
Dance groups and cultural organisations representing different regions of Greece and the wider Hellenic community will take part in the celebration:

Every dance step, melody and traditional costume will form part of the rich and colourful mosaic of Greek culture. Through their performances and devotion to tradition, the dancers will recreate the atmosphere of a genuine Greek panigiri and bring Greece a little closer to Melbourne’s Greek community.
The Dekapentavgousto celebration is more than a major religious and cultural occasion. It is also an opportunity for Melbourne’s Greeks to meet, celebrate their shared heritage and demonstrate that Greek traditions continue to be passed from one generation to the next, even thousands of kilometres away from the homeland.
The participation of so many associations and dance groups highlights the strength of unity and cooperation within the diaspora. Pontians, Kalymnians, Cretans, Macedonians and Greeks from across the country will come together through dance, music, faith and their common cultural inheritance.
With the blessing and support of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, the Greek Orthodox Parish of Panagia Soumela in Keilor East, Pontiaki Estia Melbourne and all participating cultural organisations are preparing to offer the community a memorable celebration of faith, heritage and Hellenic unity.
On 16 August 2026, Melbourne will come alive with Greek music, traditional dancing and joyful reunions—a celebration that keeps ancestral memory alive and proves that wherever Hellenism travels, Greece remains in its heart.
