Mourning in the Diaspora: Greek-Australian from Symi Killed in Shark Attack in Australia
Deep sorrow has struck the Greek Diaspora, and especially the island of Symi, following the tragic death of Mercouris Psillakis, who lost his life on Saturday morning (06.09.2025) in Australia after a shark attack while surfing. His passing was instantaneous.
The 57-year-old, affectionately known as “Merc,” was deeply loved in the coastal community of Dee Why, where he lived with his wife, daughter, and twin brother. With roots in Symi through his father, Mercouris embodied warmth, solidarity, and a lifelong passion for the sea. His loss leaves a profound void for his family, the local community, and the wider Greek Diaspora.
