In Cyprus, the implementation of a biological management pilot program of the pine processionary moth is underway by promoting natural predators such as the hoopoe ( Upupa eops), the coal tit (periparus ater cypriotes), and the Great tit (parus major). These three species feed on large quantities of pine processionary moth larvae as the larval stage coincides with their breeding season. Therefore, the need for protein-rich food for their offspring is essential.
The action involves placing artificial nests in areas with a high presence of pine processionary moths. In this way, birds will prefer the area as there will be suitable nesting space, and with the presence of high-quality and quantity of food, they will function as regulators of the pine processionary moth population. Nests have been constructed with specific specifications to meet the needs of these species.
If the pilot program succeeds, it can be applied to other areas, while if the results are not as expected, it can be applied to another area. The action is implemented in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment in collaboration with the District Agricultural Department, the Forestry Department, and the Community Councils.
Biological management of the pine processionary moth
Chemical methods of pine processionary moth control with insecticides are outdated, ineffective, and dangerous for the environment and humans in general, as well as for the rich fauna of pine forests. Biological control, which is now no less effective than chemical control, also takes into account the zero impact of this method on the pine forest ecosystem. Bacillus thuringiensis is the most common biological method for combating the pine processionary moth (combating the newly hatched larvae).
In addition to the use of Bacillus, which requires significant time and cost, the implementation of a biological management pilot program of the pine processionary moth is proposed by promoting natural predators.
