US–Canada relations and the prospect of closer cooperation with the European Union take centre stage in his conversation with Eleftheria Tiliakou.
John Cannis spoke with Kalymnos Times journalist Eleftheria Tiliakou on Friday, October 16, 2026, sharing his views on relations between the United States and Canada, trade tensions and the prospects for closer ties with Europe.
The discussion addressed the Trump administration’s tariffs on Canadian products, their impact on bilateral relations and whether Washington’s policies are encouraging Canada to strengthen its relationship with the European Union.
Another key topic was the proposal for Canada to become an EU “associate member”, including the possible implications of such an arrangement. The idea remains under discussion, with its precise scope and terms yet to be defined.
Cannis also commented on Kimberly Guilfoyle’s departure as US ambassador to Greece, following the White House’s request for her resignation.
