Kalymnos and five other Dodecanese airports are included in a single concession covering 22 regional airports. MP Manos Konsolas says the joint approach safeguards islands with lower passenger traffic.
The tender for the development of 22 regional airports, including Kalymnos Airport, has entered its second phase, according to a statement issued by Dodecanese MP Manos Konsolas on October 2, 2026.
The statement reports that the first phase has been completed, with three investment groups advancing to the next stage. Financial bids will be submitted during this second phase, leading to the selection of the concessionaire.
The process provides for a single concession covering all 22 airports. In the Dodecanese, it includes Kalymnos, Leros, Karpathos, Astypalaia, Kasos and Kastellorizo, bringing their development under a common investment framework.
Konsolas recalls that, during a meeting with the management of Greece’s Growthfund in November 2023, he argued against separating airports according to passenger traffic. Instead, he proposed that a single investor should undertake a binding commitment to develop all 22 facilities.
According to the MP, separate procedures could have concentrated investor interest on busier airports, leaving smaller facilities, such as Kasos and Kastellorizo, without investment. His statement says the proposal for a single concession was accepted and incorporated into the tender.
Konsolas also proposed tax incentives for the strategic investor taking on airports serving remote islands with lower passenger volumes, including Kalymnos. The press release does not specify whether these incentives have been incorporated into the process.
The MP believes the investment could improve airport infrastructure, expand operational capabilities and support tourism and economic development across the islands.
For Kalymnos, the announcement marks progress towards the selection of an investor. The concession has yet to be completed, however, and the statement provides no details of specific works or an implementation timetable for the island’s airport.
