A separate Architecture Council based in Kalymnos has been reinstated for the islands in the area, according to a press release from Emmanouil Mousellis, Coordinator of the Kalymnos Regional Unit. He says the decision was published on 17 September 2026.
The council’s jurisdiction covers Kalymnos, Astypalaia, Leros, Lipsi, Patmos, Agathonisi and other islands in the area. The development follows objections to the earlier decision to remove the Kalymnos council’s independent status and place its responsibilities under the corresponding council in Kos.
In his statement, Mousellis highlights the Regional Unit’s contribution. He says the Kalymnos district office offered to assign an employee to provide administrative support for the council, despite having only 16 staff members and facing staffing needs of its own.
He also points to cooperation with the Dodecanese branch of the Technical Chamber of Greece and its Kalymnos Standing Committee. Mousellis thanks Fotis Mangos, Secretary-General for the Aegean and Island Policy, for his cooperation and response to the issue.
For the Regional Unit, maintaining a separate council in Kalymnos is tied to access to services for island residents and professionals. “We have a duty to seek a solution. And we all worked together to secure this one,” Mousellis concludes.
