A process to gauge prospective student interest marks progress towards restoring an institution rooted in the island’s maritime and sponge-diving heritage.
Initial steps towards reopening the Kalymnos Diving School are underway, according to a statement issued by the Municipality of Kalymnos on 4 November 2026. A message has been sent to the Kalymnos Port Authority concerning expressions of interest from prospective students.
The municipality said it renewed its request to the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy through two official letters, dated 17 September and 22 October 2026. Mayor Ioannis Mastrokoukos also held discussions with the ministry’s political leadership to advance the issue.
The expression-of-interest process represents an initial step towards reopening the school. However, the statement does not specify when classes could begin, application deadlines or admission requirements.
Restoring the school would carry particular significance for Kalymnos, linking the training of new divers with the island’s longstanding maritime and sponge-diving traditions.
The municipal administration said it is continuing its efforts to secure the school’s reopening.
