A meeting between Kalymnos fishing representatives and Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis led to a direct telephone conversation with Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Food Thanasis Kavvadas, at the island’s Town Hall on Tuesday, October 6, 2026.
Although fisheries fall outside his ministerial responsibilities, Georgiadis agreed to hear the fishermen’s concerns during his visit to Kalymnos.
The representatives who addressed the meeting were Kostas Saroukos, president of the medium-scale fishing sector, Giannis Kardoulias, president of the offshore fishing sector, and Manolis Koullias, president of the coastal fishing sector.
Georgiadis called Thanasis Kavvadas on the spot, allowing the fishermen to speak with the deputy minister over speakerphone. During the conversation, Kavvadas assured them that the fuel issue was once again under negotiation.
The discussion continued with contributions on the Kalymnos Hospital and the fishermen’s demands from the Dodecanese MPs present — Giannis Pappas, Vasilis Ypsilantis, Manos Konsolas and Mika Iatridi — along with Katerina Emmanouil, former administrator of Kalymnos Hospital, and Christos Roilos, administrator of the 2nd Health Region of Piraeus and the Aegean.
The meeting gave fishing representatives an opportunity to convey their demands directly to government officials, while negotiations over the fuel issue remain ongoing.
