Showcasing a Vision for Sustainable Island Development
KALYMNOS – ATHENS – With a strong presence, meaningful interventions and high-level networking, the Municipality of Kalymnos emerged as one of the standout participants at the 5th Attica Green Expo 2026, reinforcing its growing role in the national discussion on island policy, sustainability and the future of small island communities.
Held from May 27 to May 30 at the Tae Kwon Do Olympic Arena in Palaio Faliro, the exhibition featured Kalymnos Mayor Giannis Mastrokoukos and Deputy Mayor for Tourism Kalliopi Koutouzi as official representatives of the island.
The Kalymnos pavilion attracted considerable attention from visitors, policymakers and institutional representatives, highlighting the island’s natural beauty, internationally renowned climbing identity, maritime heritage, sponge-diving history and sustainable alternative tourism model.
A key moment of the event was the Mayor’s participation in the panel discussion “GReco Islands: Transitioning Small Islands Towards a Sustainable and Resilient Future,” attended by Minister of Social Cohesion and Family Domna Michailidou. During his intervention, the Mayor emphasized the challenges faced by smaller island communities such as Telendos and Pserimos, stressing the need for stronger infrastructure, reliable transportation, healthcare and education services, and policies that allow residents to remain and thrive in their home communities.
Deputy Mayor Koutouzi also participated in a panel focusing on demographic challenges and family support policies, highlighting the important role of large families in preserving the social and economic vitality of island communities.
The Municipality’s participation once again demonstrated that Kalymnos is becoming a leading voice in the debate over the future of island Greece, confidently promoting its strengths, opportunities and sustainable development vision.
