Dodecanese MP Manos Konsolas has called for a dedicated funding programme to help professional fishers who used vintzotrata gear convert their vessels and continue working in fishing.
In a parliamentary intervention addressed to Greece’s Minister of Rural Development and Food, Konsolas argues that the permanent withdrawal of the fishing gear should be accompanied by practical support for the fishers affected. He proposes funding either through a ministry programme or through the Hellenic Development Bank.
According to the MP’s press release, fishers who withdraw the gear have already been promised €25,000 in financial assistance. Konsolas says further funding is needed to cover vessel conversions and enable alternative fishing activity.
He also points to an existing €16 million programme for investments in fishing vessels that do not increase their fishing capacity. The programme’s deadline has been extended to 16 October 2026, according to the press release. Konsolas argues that, because it is open to professional fishers generally and gives no priority to those who used vintzotrata gear, a separate programme is needed for the affected vessels.
