Road Safety Lifeline for Small Islands
Dodecanese MP Manos Konsolas has called for the establishment of a dedicated funding program aimed at supporting road infrastructure and road safety projects on Greece’s small islands.
In a parliamentary intervention addressed to the Ministry of Interior, Konsolas highlighted the difficulties faced by small island municipalities in securing funding for essential road works. According to the MP, existing evaluation and scoring criteria often place smaller island communities at a disadvantage compared to larger mainland municipalities with broader geographic coverage.
Konsolas stressed that improving road networks on small islands is an urgent priority, not only to enhance economic and social development but also to strengthen road safety for both residents and visitors.
He noted that several island municipalities already possess mature and ready-to-implement project studies but remain unable to access available funding schemes due to current eligibility requirements.
To address this imbalance, the Dodecanese lawmaker proposes the creation of a specialized funding mechanism exclusively targeting small island municipalities, enabling them to implement critical road infrastructure and safety projects while addressing a long-standing development challenge in insular Greece.
