Dodecanese MP Manos Konsolas has submitted a joint parliamentary intervention to the Ministers of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy and Infrastructure, proposing two immediate measures to improve port facilities and strengthen the cruise sector on Patmos.
Konsolas noted that developments in the Middle East are reshaping the regional cruise market, creating new opportunities for Patmos to increase its share, attract more cruise calls and support both tourism and the local economy.
While acknowledging that the expansion of the island’s port facilities is a necessary long-term project, he stressed that two practical measures could be implemented without delay to improve safety and the port’s ability to accommodate cruise ships.
New mooring facility for safer cruise calls
The first proposal concerns the licensing and construction of a dedicated mooring facility, allowing cruise ships to moor and anchor safely off Patmos.
According to the proposal, such a facility could provide an immediate and practical solution, enabling the island to receive more vessels even before larger port-expansion projects are completed.
Immediate repair of the damaged mooring bollard
The second proposal focuses on improving the port’s existing infrastructure and, in particular, repairing the damaged mooring bollard without further delay.
Konsolas pointed out that the current damage prevents cruise ships from safely berthing alongside the quay because there is insufficient usable space. Repairing the bollard would immediately improve the port’s functionality and its ability to accommodate visiting vessels.
“Beyond the expansion of the port facilities, which is a long-term project, there are immediate and practical solutions that could significantly benefit the cruise sector,” the Dodecanese MP stated.
A positive signal to cruise companies planning for 2027
Konsolas argued that launching and completing the two proposed interventions would send a clear and positive message to cruise companies currently preparing their itineraries and considering Patmos as a destination for 2027.
The parliamentary intervention highlights the need for timely action so that Patmos can take advantage of changing market conditions, strengthen its position as an international cruise destination and secure greater benefits for tourism and the island’s economy.
