The People’s Rally of Kalymnos (Laiki Syspeirosi) has launched strong criticism against both the government and the municipal authority over the situation concerning the vessel “Nisos Kalymnos,” calling for the immediate payment of all outstanding wages owed to the crew.
In its statement, the group referred to what it described as the “labor hostage situation” faced by the crew, citing complaints made public by the maritime unions PEMEN and STEFENSON. It also noted that the work stoppage initiated by the majority of the crew exposed both the government and the Municipality of Kalymnos.
The announcement accuses the municipal authority of failing to openly support the sailors and of being more concerned about protecting the image of the company and the island rather than addressing workers’ rights. It also criticizes broader government policies regarding maritime transportation.
The statement further highlights the high cost of ferry tickets, noting that fares between Kalymnos and the nearby island of Kos can reach up to €32, while arguing that safe and affordable transportation for island residents is not being ensured.
The People’s Rally concluded by calling on Kalymnos residents to support the struggle for safe, regular, fast, and affordable transportation services, as well as dignified collective labor agreements for workers.
