Serious issue at Mastichari Port – Immediate intervention needed ahead of tourist season
A major issue affecting the operation of Mastichari Port in Kos has been highlighted by the Regional Unit of Kalymnos, as the summer tourist season approaches and inter-island connectivity demands increase.
During the severe weather conditions of this past winter, a significant accumulation of sand was observed داخل the port, resulting in reduced water depths and difficulties in the safe approach of passenger vessels operating the Kalymnos – Mastichari – Kalymnos route.
Incidents have already been recorded confirming the seriousness of the situation. One vessel struck the seabed, sustained damage, and was forced to alter its route, now docking at the port of Kos instead of Mastichari. This development has caused considerable disruption to both residents and visitors, as well as to the smooth ferry connection between the two islands.
Mastichari Port serves as a key link to Kos International Airport and plays a crucial role in the transportation of tourists to and from Kalymnos, making its proper operation vital for the local economy.
Particular concern is raised by the fact that current conditions pose serious risks to navigation safety. The accumulation of sediment and reduced depths significantly increase the likelihood of vessel groundings, especially during docking and departure maneuvers.
The Regional Unit of Kalymnos has already sent a formal letter to the President of the Kos Port Fund, urging immediate action to restore adequate depths and ensure the full functionality of the port.
As emphasized, the timely resolution of the issue is essential for ensuring safe transportation and supporting the local economy ahead of the tourist season.
