The deadline for submitting applications to purchase state-owned properties that have long been held by private individuals has officially been extended until September 11, 2027, Greece’s Ministry of National Economy and Finance has announced.
Yannis Pappas, New Democracy MP for the Dodecanese, welcomed the extension, stressing that it gives eligible citizens additional time to collect the required documents and complete the process under the conditions set out in Law 5024/2023.
The extension is particularly significant for the Dodecanese, where the status of such state-owned properties has remained unresolved for many residents for decades. According to the MP’s statement, Mr Pappas had formally raised the need for an extension with the political leadership of the relevant ministry.
He has also called for amendments to the existing law to make the purchase process more flexible, practical and effective, enabling a greater number of eligible citizens to participate. According to his announcement, the proposed legislative changes are expected to be brought before Parliament within the coming days.
“The official announcement of the extension is a very positive development. It gives our fellow citizens the time they need to make use of the opportunity provided by the law and resolve property issues that have remained outstanding for many years,” Mr Pappas said.
The Dodecanese MP stressed that, in addition to the extended deadline, a more effective legal framework is needed so that the purchase option becomes accessible to as many eligible citizens as possible.
“This issue is particularly important for the Dodecanese. The forthcoming legislative amendment moves in that direction and represents another significant step forward for our islands,” he concluded.
