The need for a new indoor sports facility in Kalymnos was highlighted by South Aegean Regional Councilor Mr. Mikis Zirounis during the 2nd Accountability Session for 2026, where he submitted a formal question to the Regional Authority.
As he noted, four sports clubs and more than 400 children are currently sharing the island’s only indoor gym, built in 1980, which no longer meets modern standards. The facility suffers from outdated infrastructure, including old locker rooms, insufficient electrical systems, and a limited seating capacity of around 100 people.
Despite these conditions, local athletes continue to achieve significant success, winning regional championships in the Dodecanese and the Aegean, showcasing their talent and determination.
Mr. Zirounis also referred to past efforts, including the purchase of land in the Argos area of Kalymnos for the construction of a new gym, which ultimately did not materialize. A later attempt to secure an alternative solution also failed.
He further mentioned that the General Secretary of Sports, Mr. Mavrotas, had previously expressed willingness to provide a ready study for the project, an initiative that did not proceed for unspecified reasons.
The Regional Councilor called on the Regional Authority to take a clear stance, asking whether it will support and fund the project if a complete proposal is submitted by the Municipality of Kalymnos.
Concluding, he congratulated the athletes of the Kalymnos Academy for their recent achievements, emphasizing that “no more promises are needed—now it is time for action.”
