“€50 Million Plan Set to Transform Leros”
The significance of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ tour of Leros and Agathonisi was highlighted in a statement by Katerina Emmanouil, New Democracy’s South Aegean Coordinator within the party’s Secretariat for Children’s Rights, who described the visit as tangible support for Greece’s remote island communities.
Emmanouil welcomed the prime minister to her native island of Leros and accompanied him, alongside the government delegation, throughout his tour of the two islands.
During his visit to Leros, Mitsotakis toured the island’s hospital and was briefed on the major upgrading works already carried out. Discussions also focused on strengthening Greece’s National Health System on the islands and addressing the particular challenges of attracting medical personnel to remote island regions.
The prime minister subsequently visited the Alinda anchorage, the port of Lakki, the historic “Leros” hotel and the Town Hall. His visit concluded with a meeting and discussion with residents in Agia Marina.
Particular emphasis was placed on €50 million in funding earmarked for major infrastructure projects on Leros. According to Emmanouil, the funding acknowledges both the impact of migration pressures on the island and the substantial preparatory work undertaken by local authorities to bring the projects to maturity.
“What is happening in Leros at this moment is a small miracle,” she said, arguing that close cooperation between the Greek government, the South Aegean Region and the Municipality of Leros can turn planning into concrete projects and political commitment into meaningful benefits for residents.
The tour concluded on the border island of Agathonisi, where the prime minister visited the military observation post, the Multipurpose Regional Medical Centre and the Diachronic Archaeological Museum.
According to Emmanouil, the prime minister’s presence on the two Dodecanese border islands sent a clear message: island Greece is not on the margins of government policy, but at the heart of a plan aimed at supporting development, social cohesion and the long-term prospects of local communities.
