New Local Government Rules Take Effect
Greece’s Ministry of Interior has issued an urgent circular on June 30th, 2026, implementing the new Local Government Code (Law 5314/2026), introducing the procedure for electing the new Municipal Council Presidium and Municipal Committee for the second term of the 2024–2028 municipal period. The elections must be completed by 7 July 2026, as the constitution of these bodies is a legal prerequisite for the proper functioning of municipal authorities.
Accordingly, the Municipality of Kalymnos has convened a special public in-person session of the Municipal Council for Friday, 3 July 2026, at 7:00 p.m. During the meeting, councillors will first elect the new Municipal Council Presidium and subsequently the regular and alternate members of the Municipal Committee for the second half of the current municipal term.
Under the new legal framework, the Municipal Council Presidium will be elected by open vote, while the Municipal Committee members will be elected by secret ballot. The circular also introduces updated provisions regarding the composition of municipal bodies, the participation of minority groups, replacement procedures for members, and the legality review of the election process.
