The Board of Directors of the Panhellenic Union of Pensioners of the Seamen’s Pension Fund (PES-NAT) expresses its solidarity and support for the just struggle for survival of the farmers and livestock breeders, who are being severely affected by the anti-farmer and anti-people policies of successive governments, the European Union, and capital.
Primary production is being attacked by each government in power, through the high price of fuel—which farmers pay at the same rate as the affluent shipowners—as well as the exorbitant costs of fertilizers, veterinary products, and pesticides.
While production costs rise and producers are forced to sell at humiliatingly low prices, we all witness how much we are paying for basic goods at the supermarkets.
In contrast, large landowners, companies, and investment funds profit enormously under the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), which compensates them per acre regardless of actual production.
Meanwhile, scandals such as that of OPEKEPE are direct offspring of the CAP, benefiting, as usual, government cronies, while the farmers are left without even the basics.
As always, the government’s response was to deploy the riot police (MAT), but the indignation and the situation are such that this effort is in vain.
Now, the government has mobilized its appointed judiciary to begin prosecuting those who are literally fighting for their survival.
The only acceptable solution is the immediate satisfaction of the just demands of the farmers and livestock breeders, the withdrawal of the riot police, and the activation of the justice system where it is truly needed, such as in the case of OPEKEPE.
No consent to policies that crush farmers, pensioners, and workers for the profits of the plutocracy.
Farmers – pensioners – workers – self-employed – students, united in a common struggle, can overthrow this brutal policy.
