Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis attended the ceremony, while a medical equipment donation by Katerina and Ilias Kathopoulis honours their father, surgeon Michalis Kathopoulis.
The Cardiology Unit at Kalymnos Hospital was officially inaugurated on Tuesday, October 6, 2026 in the presence of Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis, marking the completion of a significant upgrade to the facilities of Vouvaleio Hospital.
The ceremony was attended by members of parliament, New Democracy political figures from the Dodecanese and local government representatives. Metropolitan Paisios of Leros, Kalymnos and Astypalaia conducted the blessing.
The area that housed the hospital’s COVID department during the pandemic has now been repurposed. According to the hospital administration, the Cardiology Unit forms part of a recently renovated hospital area covering 400 square metres in total.
The project was carried out under the supervision of the Ministry of Health, with €604,000 in funding from the Recovery and Resilience Fund. Furnishings and non-medical equipment for the renovated area, costing €22,400, were financed through Kalymnos Hospital’s own budget.
A significant contribution came from siblings Katerina and Ilias Kathopoulis, who donated €32,500 worth of medical equipment for the Cardiology Unit.
