€13.1 Million Funding Plan Advances as Island’s Largest Infrastructure Project Gains Momentum
A major milestone for the island of Kalymnos has been reached following the approval by Greece’s Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Vasilis Kikilias, to move forward with the funding proposal for the construction of a new ferry pier outside the current port of Kalymnos.
The project, with a total budget of €13.12 million, is expected to be financed through the national “Transport 2021–2027” program and is widely regarded as the largest development project ever launched on the island.
According to the Municipality of Kalymnos, local authorities and the Municipal Port Fund worked intensively over recent months in close cooperation with the South Aegean Region, which serves as the implementing authority for the project.
Mayor Giannis Mastrokoukos described the development as the result of a strategic partnership between the Municipality and the South Aegean Regional Administration. Regional Governor Giorgos Hatzimarkos and Dodecanese MP Giannis Pappas were also credited for supporting the advancement of a long-delayed infrastructure plan that had remained unresolved for more than two decades.
Municipal officials stressed that the agreement reflects a conscious decision for institutional cooperation rather than a transfer of responsibilities, underlining that persistent efforts and coordinated planning have finally brought the new port project to a decisive stage.
The upcoming funding process is expected to pave the way for a new era of economic growth and improved maritime connectivity for Kalymnos and the wider Dodecanese region.
