The People’s Rally (Laiki Syspeirosi) of Kalymnos has issued a statement strongly opposing the use of the historic Nikiforeio school complex as the venue for a private entertainment event, arguing that the decision commercializes public schools and undermines their historical and educational significance.
In its statement, the group describes Nikiforeio as a landmark building with deep historical value for Kalymnos and criticizes its use as a nightlife venue, referring to the installation of event stands and the sale of alcoholic beverages. It also points out that the school is located very close to Kalymnos General Hospital, raising concerns about excessive noise affecting patients and healthcare professionals.
The People’s Rally argues that public schools should not be used for commercial activities and maintains that such decisions reflect a broader policy of treating public property as a source of private profit. According to the statement, culture should instead promote access to arts, education, sports, and high-quality public events that are freely accessible to everyone.
The organization also calls for transparency regarding the financial terms under which the public school premises were granted and the approval process for the event. It demands an end to activities that, in its view, alter the historical identity of Nikiforeio, emphasizing that school facilities belong to the educational community rather than private business interests.
