The pine processionary caterpillar threatens the pine forest in Agios Vasileios, Pothia, Kalymnos. A municipal team began efforts to remove the nests of pine processionary caterpillars that had appeared on the pine trees.
This is a phenomenon observed nationwide, and according to a protocol established by the relevant service of the South Aegean Region, the nests are being removed and incinerated. The process began in schools and residential areas and will extend to the pine forest of Agios Vasileios. Spraying the pine trees is not feasible at this time according to the protocol, but it is expected to be carried out in September.
These caterpillars pose a threat not only to the pine trees but also to humans and their pets. The hairs on these caterpillars can cause allergic reactions on the skin and eyes of humans, as well as respiratory problems.
