Statement by the President of SYRIZA–Progressive Alliance, Socrates Famellos
Mr. Mitsotakis fled through the back door to avoid the farmers
The Prime Minister is on the run.
After causing the perfect storm and the collapse of the primary sector, Mr. Mitsotakis today slipped out through the back gate of the Alexandroupolis airport fence to avoid meeting the farmers.
What could he possibly tell them?
About the “blue locusts” and the theft of one billion euros from OPEKEPE by the “Frapedes” and the “Butchers”?
About the delays in the 2024 and 2025 subsidies that are driving farmers to despair?
About the ELGA compensations that, in some regions like Thessaly, are still pending after two and a half years?
About the outbreak of sheep and goat pox that is wiping out livestock and destroying Greek animal farming?
Or about the extremely high production costs?
Or the drought affecting even the region of Evros?
Or the privatization of irrigation?
These are the issues I discussed with the farmers in Alexandroupolis on Friday.
These are the issues for which they are demonstrating today in Athens.
And they are right.
New Democracy is dangerous and is leading to the desertification of rural Greece. They must go — and not through the back door, but out of government.
For a year now, SYRIZA–Progressive Alliance has proposed a comprehensive plan to strengthen the entire agricultural sector — a plan essential for the productive and social revival of our country.
And only a progressive government can implement this plan.
