Cleaning services on Pserimos and Telendos, nursery needs and electrical maintenance featured prominently at the October 1 council meeting.
Staff shortages and difficulties delivering essential municipal services dominated the Kalymnos Municipal Council meeting on Thursday, October 1, 2026. The council also approved the fourth amendment to the municipal budget and the creation of new permanent posts at the Municipal Day Care facility, while withdrawing an agenda item concerning a proposed recycling facility at Giannochorafa because the application file was not ready for consideration.
Three items introduced outside the published agenda highlighted the municipality’s staffing difficulties. The first concerned its inability to meet cleaning needs on Pserimos and Telendos, with a study concerning the outsourcing of the service to an external provider.
The second concerned the municipality’s inability to carry out cleaning work at the nursery and its assignment to Polydrastiki.
The third addressed difficulties carrying out maintenance and repairs to electrical installations, alongside a request to recruit staff. This item was approved by majority vote, with councilor Giorgos Choullis not voting in favour.
Budget amendment approved
The fourth amendment to the municipality’s 2026 budget passed, with Giannis Galouzis’s council group and Giorgos Choullis recording a “present” vote.
The council withdrew the item seeking its favorable opinion on the establishment of a facility for recycling excavation, construction and demolition waste at Giannochorafa, Kalymnos, because the application file was not sufficiently developed.
Unanimous decisions on preschool staffing, municipal archives and athlete support
Counselors unanimously approved a targeted amendment to the municipality’s Internal Service Organisation, establishing new permanent staff posts in the Preschool Education Directorate.
Regarding the proposed municipal archive at the municipal property known as “Parking”, in the Kalamiotissa parish, the council unanimously agreed to form a committee to assess the premises’ suitability.
It also unanimously approved one-off financial assistance for two adult, financially disadvantaged athletes with distinguished sporting achievements, who are registered citizens of Kalymnos.
Proposed grants of €9,000 for five sports clubs
For the 2026 sports club grants, a proposed allocation totalling €9,000 was presented, based on applications received and the clubs’ competitive commitments:
