Mayors and municipal representatives from across the Dodecanese and the Cyclades gathered in Kalymnos on Thursday, September 10, 2026, for the Ordinary General Assembly of the South Aegean Regional Solid Waste Management Authority (FODSA).
The meeting, held at the “Ai Mousai” Kalymnos Reading Hall, highlighted the importance of cooperation among island municipalities in addressing solid-waste management—an issue with major environmental, economic and social implications for the South Aegean islands.
A notable presence was that of Alexandros Athanasiou, Mayor of Syros–Ermoupolis, who also represented the Municipality of Astypalaia.
The General Assembly was also attended by Panagiotis Krontiras, Mayor of Tinos; Theodosios Sousoudis, Mayor of Andros; Nikitas Tsambalakis, Mayor of Patmos; and Timotheos Kottakis, Mayor of Leros.
The Municipality of Kalymnos was represented by Mayor Ioannis Mastrokoukos, who also serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the South Aegean FODSA.
The municipalities of Tilos, Halki and Karpathos were represented by Deputy Regional Governor of the Dodecanese Christos Efstratiou, while the Municipality of Mykonos was represented by Konstantinos Sahas.
The agenda included an update for shareholders, approval of the 2025 pricing-policy report, revisions to the 2026 waste-management costs and member-municipality contributions, as well as approval of FODSA’s technical programme, budget, pricing policy and contributions for 2027.
Participants also examined the 2025 annual financial statements and the accompanying reports of the Board of Directors and auditors, while the appointment of auditors for the 2026 financial year was also included on the agenda.
Hosting the General Assembly in Kalymnos, with representatives from numerous islands in attendance, gave the meeting particular significance and brought together local authorities facing the complex challenges of waste management across the island region.
