The Kalymnos Water and Sewerage Company (DEYAK) Receives the Study for the “Replacement of Asbestos-Cement Water Supply Pipes” – A Project Exceeding €11 Million
The Kalymnos Water and Sewerage Company (Δ.Ε.Υ.Α.Κ.) has officially received Study No. 12/2025 concerning the replacement of old asbestos-cement water supply pipelines on the island. The study was approved unanimously by the present members of the Board of Directors on August 8, 2025.
For the first time in decades, the groundwork has been laid for a landmark project on our island, with a budget exceeding €11 million. It is the largest water supply infrastructure project ever initiated in Kalymnos in recent decades, aiming to provide a permanent solution to a long-standing and critical issue affecting water quality, availability, and above all, the health of residents.
Upon implementation, the project will:
- Replace all old asbestos-cement pipelines with modern, safe, and durable materials.
- Drastically reduce water loss and frequent breakdowns, mainly caused by the age and deterioration of the current network.
- Ensure a stable and high-quality water supply for the island for decades to come.
In a joint statement, Mayor Yiannis Mastrokoukos and DEYAK President Michalis Lelekis emphasized:
“Today’s Municipal Authority and DEYAK’s administration prove through action that with responsibility, strategy, and hard work, we can achieve goals that for years seemed unattainable. This project is not just a technical upgrade – it is an investment in the future of Kalymnos, in the health and quality of life of all residents.”
The approval and receipt of the study marks the first decisive step toward the realization of the project. DEYAK continues to work diligently to secure funding and to accelerate all necessary procedures for implementation.
The Municipal Authority of Yiannis Mastrokoukos remains firmly committed to modernizing infrastructure and managing the island’s precious water resources efficiently.
