SYRIZA Launches Fresh Attack on Government Policy
ATHENS – Greece’s growing housing crisis has once again become a focal point of political debate following a statement by SYRIZA–Progressive Alliance, which cited a recent International Monetary Fund (IMF) report highlighting the severe challenges facing the country’s housing market.
According to SYRIZA, the IMF report paints a troubling picture of housing affordability in Greece. The report indicates that residential property prices have increased by 85% since 2016, while average housing costs exceeded one-third of disposable household income in 2025.
The opposition party also points to data showing that more than 55% of homes currently on the market are priced above €200,000, making home ownership increasingly unattainable for a large share of the population.
In its statement, SYRIZA further argues that the rapid expansion of short-term rentals has worsened the problem. The sector has reportedly grown by 240% since 2017, significantly reducing the supply of available housing and adding further pressure to both property prices and rental costs.
The party accuses the New Democracy government of failing to address the crisis effectively and argues that housing affordability has become a pressing social issue affecting thousands of households across the country.
SYRIZA is calling for a new housing policy focused on citizens’ needs, greater affordability and improved access to housing, warning that the crisis can no longer be overlooked as living costs continue to rise.
The housing issue is increasingly emerging as one of Greece’s most significant economic and social challenges, with affordability concerns becoming a central topic in the national political agenda.
