On the decision of the Political Secretariat of SYRIZA-PS regarding Alexis Tsipras:
Zachariadis outlined three strategies for dealing with former party leaders:
- Open disagreement and confrontation, as seen with Samaras in ND and to some extent with Karamanlis.
- Pretending nothing happened – which he considers ridiculous.
- The path SYRIZA chose: a serious, politically meaningful response that respects the political impact of Tsipras. The focus should remain on politics and programs.
He praised Tsipras’ recent interventions – one on the Turkish Cypriot community and one on the Unknown Soldier monument – as aligned with SYRIZA’s own positions. “We are comrades, not opponents,” he said, stressing the importance of political convergence.
On SYRIZA-PS’s call for an electoral alliance:
Zachariadis said SYRIZA has been calling for political and electoral collaboration since January 2025, specifically addressing Charitsis and Androulakis. He found it absurd to now call Tsipras a “divider” after all he did for the party – taking it from 3% to 36% and into government.
On the need to focus on the bigger political picture:
He emphasized the importance of transcending internal divisions and acting with unity. Referencing both SYRIZA’s decision and Tsipras’ interview in Efimerida ton Syntakton, he said both sides are trying to rise above the current difficulties.
He noted recent polling showing ND declining, PASOK lagging, and the broader opposition fragmented. What’s needed ahead of the next elections, he said, is a composition of forces, unity, and a dynamic of multiplication – not division.
On SYRIZA-PS’s political strategy:
SYRIZA-PS follows a clear strategy – inviting cooperation with other progressive forces. With a parliamentary presence of 25 MPs, an active stance on key issues like inflation, scandals, and political developments, Zachariadis stressed that a lonely path leads nowhere. It only benefits Mitsotakis.
SYRIZA wants broad collaborations, major alliances, and a strong social movement to bring about political change.
