The completion of ten orthopaedic operations at Kalymnos Hospital by orthopaedic surgeon Michalis Sokorelos was met with considerable satisfaction, as part of the “Kalymnos Model” pilot programme, introduced by Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis.
Sokorelos is Coordinating Director of Orthopaedics and former Deputy Administrator of Rhodes General Hospital “Andreas Papandreou”. His presence at Vouvaleio Hospital enabled the ten procedures to be performed on the patients’ home island.
The central principle of the “Kalymnos Model” is to bring specialist doctors to patients in regional communities. The approach seeks to reduce the need for patients and those accompanying them to travel to major urban centres, where highly specialised doctors are usually based.
For island residents, such journeys involve disruption, travel and accommodation costs, and the additional burden of receiving treatment in unfamiliar surroundings, away from their families and everyday lives.
Providing surgery locally aims to reduce these pressures and strengthen patients’ sense of security by allowing them to receive care in familiar surroundings, close to their loved ones. The intention is for these conditions to support recovery and contribute to a better overall treatment experience.
The ten orthopaedic procedures offer a concrete example of this approach at Kalymnos Hospital, highlighting the importance of access to specialist surgical care on the island itself.
