Yesterday’s Municipal Council meeting once again highlighted two completely different approaches to politics and the functioning of institutions.
On the one hand, there is the Municipal Administration, which is working systematically and methodically toward the definitive resolution of a decades-old problem: waste management and the closure of the landfill site, an issue that has burdened the island for nearly 50 years.
On the other hand, there is the leader of the opposition faction, Mr. Mavros, who once again chose tension, shouting, insults, personal attacks, and bullying behavior, effectively obstructing the smooth conduct of the meeting.
It is truly remarkable that a person with many years of involvement in public affairs, who has participated in various political groups over time and is fully aware of the history and evolution of the landfill issue, now appears to be “discovering” that the landfill is emitting smoke.
He knows very well that this problem did not emerge today, and he is equally aware that specific interventions and projects are already underway, leading toward a permanent solution to the issue.
The Municipal Administration does not invest in tension or alarmism. It invests in work, solutions, and responsibility toward citizens.
In contrast, Mr. Mavros appears to have chosen to invest politically in the failure of both the community and the Municipal Administration, believing that toxicity, the undermining of institutions, and the creation of impressions can generate political benefits.
Citizens, however, are the ultimate judges. They know who is working to solve the community’s major problems and who chooses the path of tension, disruption, and fruitless confrontation.
